The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is a beautiful encounter with God's infinite mercy. If you haven't been to confession in a long time, do not be afraid. Follow this simple guide to prepare and make your confession.
Before entering the confession booth, spend quiet time reflecting on your sins using the Ten Commandments or a guide. Be truly sorry for your sins and resolve to sin no more.
Kneel or sit. The priest will welcome you. Make the Sign of the Cross and say:
"Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been [time] since my last confession."
State your sins clearly and honestly. You can start with your most difficult sins. When you are finished, say:
"I am sorry for these and all my other sins which I cannot now remember."
The priest will offer you words of encouragement, advise you, and assign a penance (prayers or actions to show your desire to amend your life).
The priest will ask you to pray an Act of Contrition. Recite it with sincerity, expressing your sorrow and love for God.
The priest will extend his hand and say the words of Absolution. Make the Sign of the Cross and respond: "Amen." The priest will dismiss you in peace. Go and perform your penance.
